Colts don’t seem pleased with out-of-shape Hakeem Nicks

Hakeem Nicks’ first year with the Colts is going about as well as his final year with the Giants did.

The veteran wide receiver, who flopped in a contract year in New York, hasn’t exactly drawn rave reviews from the Indianapolis coaching staff, which feels his conditioning is an issue as preseason games near.

“I don’t know if I can say that I’ve seen enough,” Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton told the Terre Haute Tribune-Star. “I think he is still working to get himself in game shape. His talent is well documented and his ability to be a productive receiver in the league is without a doubt something that we are not questioning, he’s a special talent.”

Nicks, still just 26, is coming off a zero-touchdown campaign in his walk year with the Giants. The former first-round pick (29th overall in 2009) posted a combined 1,588 receiving yards the past two seasons while dealing with a series of minor injuries.

Nicks got off to a fast start in his career, posting back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in his second and third year in the league while hauling in 18 touchdown catches, but was supplanted as the Giants’ top option by Victor Cruz in recent years. The team opted to go with third-year pro Rueben Randle as the No. 2 wideout rather than bringing back Nicks.

He signed a modest one-year deal with the Colts, hoping to have a big season and re-establish his market, and serve as a complement to starters Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton.

Instead, he’s starting slow again.
