Cafe Wha? owner Manny Roth passes away

Manny RothAP
Manny Roth — owner of the famed Greenwich Village club Cafe Wha? where a young Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen performed on its basement stage — has died at the age of 94, his daughter said Friday.

Roth, the uncle of Van Halen singer David Lee Roth, died July 25 of natural causes at his home in Ojai, Calif., Jodi Roth said.

As boisterous as his loud-mouthed nephew, Roth was a good man to know during a special place and time — when the Village was a mecca for upcoming artists and bohemians.

On any given night, you might see Woody Allen doing standup, or take in performances by Peter, Paul and Mary or David Crosby.

Founded in the late 1950s, Cafe Wha? was a former stable on MacDougal Street that Roth and his friends personally renovated.
