Gossage on plaque: ‘Today’s my greatest day’

As a Yankee, Rich “Goose” Gossage’s favorite day of the regular season was always Old-Timers’ Day. He, however, never had one quite like this back in his playing days.

The legendary right-handed reliever with the overpowering fastball and bushy mustache was honored on Sunday — Old-Timers’ Day at Yankee Stadium — with a plaque that will reside in Monument Park, one day after former Yankees first baseman Tino Martinez was bestowed the same honor. Gossage became the 28th member of the select group.

“I spent six years [1978-1983, 11 games in 1989] out in there [the bullpen] looking at Monument Park and I can’t even imagine being out there,” Gossage said. “This is the greatest day I’ve ever had.”

As a Yankee, Gossage, 62, posted a 42-28 mark with a 2.14 ERA and 151 saves in 319 games. He finished his 22-year career with 310 saves. He helped the Yankees to two World Series, including a championship over the Dodgers in 1978.

“To be here today, to be honored with a plaque in Monument Park, it’s over my head,” said the Hall of Famer and eight-time All-Star.
