Latest social media stunt shows people are too busy to be happy

If your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter feed have been full of lots of happiness lately, there’s a pretty good reason for it.

Chances are your friends are taking up the latest social media craze and being part of the challenge to be happy for 100 days.

The campaign, 100happydays, encourages users to submit a picture everyday of something that makes them happy.

This could range from a simple meeting with a friend, to your favorite coffee shop, pet or random happy moment.

It also says the campaign isn’t a competition to make your mates jealous or a show-off contest, but more of an “ability to share the moment you’re in.”

According to the site, 71 percent of people who took it up were unable to complete it, citing time as the main reason.

But according to clinical, health and forensic psychologist Dr. Bob Montgomery, it simply won’t work because it’s an impossible challenge to begin with.

He says that as humans, we can’t ever be happy all of the time because life is full of bad or disappointing moments.

“It’s a silly gimmick,” he told reporters.

“The reason why 71 percent of people can’t stick to this is because we can’t be happy 100 percent of the time.

“Most people have mixed feelings in any single day and it’s important to accept the good with the bad.”

He added it was impossible to put unhappiness out of your mind when you are told you can’t think about it.

“If you want the chance to feel good, you need to accept there’s a risk of feeling bad,” Dr. Montgomery said.

For anyone not familiar with the #100happydays campaign, here’s an example of what’s out there.

Smile, sit back and enjoy in the name of happiness.
