School cafeterias are part of the obesity problem

Why go to McDonald’s? City elementary-school students can eat fattening lunches any day of the week in their own cafeterias.

The Department of Education, which is notifying parents if their kids are overweight or obese, fills students’ trays with artery-clogging grub and veggies that kids say are inedible.

A typical menu for grades K-8 includes items like greasy mozzarella sticks, cheesy ranch crispy chicken sandwiches — and pizza every Friday.

Other belly-busting meals are fish-and-cheese sandwiches, Jamaican beef patties and “classic” grilled cheese served with a bag of SunChips.

Schools also serve collard greens, chickpea salads and “confetti corn” — but students called those hard to stomach.

“They give out vegetables but they don’t even taste good,” said Gwendolyn Williams, 9, who was declared overweight by her Staten Island school. “No one eats them because they just taste terrible.”
