Stomach ailment forces Mets’ Granderson to the bench

SEATTLE — Curtis Granderson wasn’t in much condition to play on Tuesday.

After coming down with a stomach ailment the previous night, the Mets outfielder told manager Terry Collins he belonged on the bench against the Mariners.

It left Collins to go with a starting outfield of Eric Young Jr., Juan Lagares and Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

“[Granderson] has been sick since midnight,” Collins said before the Mets’ 3-1 win over the Mariners at Safeco Field. “We’ve got him on fluids.”

Granderson was 7-for-33 (.212) over his last eight games.

Outfielder Chris Young, who sustained a cramp in his left calf running to first base Monday night and was removed from the game, did not play Tuesday night.

Jacob deGrom, who allowed just one run in seven innings and picked up his fourth victory, will be monitored to ensure he’s not overworked in the second half, according to Collins.

“We don’t need to have another Matt Harvey on our hands,” Collins said, referring to the Mets starter who underwent Tommy John surgery last year. “We want to make sure we don’t carried away with [deGrom’s] workload and keep him as fresh as we can and as strong as we can, so if you look up in three weeks and this kid is accruing a lot of innings, it might be time to skip him, push him back or put him in the bullpen. Right now he is going to start.”

Scott Rice, who last month was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday to remove a bone spur from his left elbow, according to assistant general manager John Ricco. The lefty Rice was 1-2 with a 5.93 ERA in 32 appearances for the Mets this season.

Mets catching prospect Kevin Plawecki, 23, will miss the next “few” games for Las Vegas, according to Ricco, after recently being diagnosed with mild vertigo (dizziness). He hasn’t played since Thursday.

Wilmer Flores’ 22-game hitting streak for Triple-A Las Vegas was snapped Tuesday night. He went 0-for-3.
