Coast Guard rescues trans-Atlantic rower five days into journey

And he only had 3,289 miles to go.

A Scottish rower attempting a trans-Atlantic voyage was rescued Saturday by the US Coast Guard off the coast of Long Island — only five days and 111 miles into his voyage.

The Coast Guard says 39-year-old Niall Iain Macdonald was scooped up about 50 miles south of Shinnecock.

Macdonald hoped to row solo from New York to Scotland to raise money for the Scottish Association for Mental Health.

But he made a distress call Friday and the Coast Guard responded with a cutter based in Bayonne, NJ. He was spotted around midnight.

Lt. James Provost says Macdonald was in pain, and his face was covered in blood from a cut to his head.
