‘Orange,’ ‘True Detective’ win at Creative Arts Emmys

The 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards are still a week away, but the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday night offered some clues about who may be walking away with a coveted trophy at the Aug. 25 ceremony.

FX’s “Fargo,” HBO’s “True Detective” and Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” each won the Outstanding Casting award in its category — in the past, a bellwether for Outstanding Series winners at the Primetime Emmys.

“Modern Family” won the casting award in 2010, kicking off its four-year domination of the Outstanding Comedy Series category. “Mad Men” (a four-time drama series winner) and “30 Rock” (a three-time comedy series winner) also count the casting award in their trophy hauls.

The Outstanding Drama Series competition is particularly fierce this year, with “True Detective” entering the category despite its eight-episode length and closed-ended storyline. The Matthew McConaughey-Woody Harrelson starrer will face off with last year’s winner “Breaking Bad,” Netflix’s sleek “ House of Cards,” HBO’s übersuccessful “Game of Thrones” and category stalwarts “Mad Men” and “Downton Abbey.”

In the first year since 2010 that miniseries will compete in a separate category, “Fargo” will face FX’s “American Horror Story: Coven,” A&E’s “Bonnie & Clyde,” BBC America’s “Luther,” HBO’s “Treme” and Starz’s “The White Queen.”

“Orange Is the New Black” will have to dethrone four-time winner “Modern Family” to go home with the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy (it’s also up against “The Big Bang Theory,” “Louie,” “Silicon Valley” and Veep”). Giving “OITNB” a boost heading into the awards — an outstanding guest actress win on Saturday for its star Uzo Aduba, a k a Crazy Eyes.
