Loathsome ‘Dom Hemingway’ is a waste of Jude Law’s talents

Rogues can also be hateable, as the black comedy “Dom Hemingway” demonstrates.

Jude Law plays the self-destructive title character, a hyperverbal lowlife just out of prison after 12 years who meets up with his best mate (Richard E. Grant) and bumps along to the South of France for a weekend with his former crime boss (Demian Bichir), who gives Dom a huge payoff. Which Dom promptly loses. Then he skips back home to London to try to make amends to his estranged daughter (Emilia Clarke).

Written and directed by Richard Shepard (“The Matador”), this pointless study of a witless character is a sad waste of Law’s talents. The more zestily he delivers Dom’s profane tirades, the more you wish Shepard gave us a reason to care about this lout.
