Jets rookie wide receiver Jalen Saunders did not clear much up about what happened to him last Friday when he drove off a road near the team’s training center.
Saunders, speaking Wednesday for the first time since the incident, said he never lost consciousness and the episode was not caused by a preexisting condition. Outside of that, he did not offer much clarity on the situation. He did say a neurologist is evaluating him to determine when he can return to the football field.
“I’m not sure what it is,” Saunders said. “That’s why I got the tests done on me. I’m still waiting on information to get back from the team doctors. So whenever I figure out what is going on with my body, I’ll be happy to share what’s going on.”
Saunders declined to discuss much about what happened before the event.
“Because I’m not trying to relive that moment again,” he said. “It was something that was unusual. That wasn’t a part of me. It’s very shocking. Obviously you don’t want to be at a young age going through something like that. It was a shocking situation, very unusual, but I’m alive and happy.”
Saunders said he expects to be playing again soon. He will be held out of Friday’s game with the Giants.
One of Rex Ryan’s most memorable moments as Jets coach came last year after the game with the Giants when he turned sideways during his press conference as he tired of answering questions about who his starting quarterback would be.
Ryan reflected on the moment Wednesday.
“I got a lot of flak from you guys,” he said to reporters. “Let’s face it. They were going to run me out of here. Was that my proudest moment? Probably not. It was kind of funny. But you know what? I think I just got a little tired of [the questions]. I think with every day, and it’s like, ‘Guys, I’m not going to answer the question.’ ”
Quarterback Mark Sanchez suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of that game, adding a different dynamic.
“Sometimes after games, we tell our players to cool off a little bit, but sometimes, I need to cool off, too,” Ryan said. “Sometimes, you get carried away a little bit.”
Speaking of getting annoyed at quarterback questions, Michael Vick clearly has hit his limit on being asked who the starting quarterback is. Vick bristled Wednesday when the topic came up.
“Jesus Christ. You’re at it again. You will all see who is out there,” Vick said.
Vick all along has said Geno Smith is the starter. It’s his bosses who won’t admit it.
The Jets will hold a “Family Night” at Hofstra on Thursday night. … The team placed rookie CB Dexter McDougle on season-ending injured reserve. McDougle tore the ACL in his left knee. He tweeted he was undergoing surgery Wednesday.
