Free Wi Fi coming to NY airports

The Port Authority voted Wednesday to renegotiate its airport Wi Fi contract — and finally give free service to fliers.

Passengers stuck waiting in JFK and LaGuardia will be able to surf online for free for 30 minutes, and will get to enjoy faster speeds.

The Port Authority and airlines will lose almost $2 million in revenue, with the airlines missing out on $1.4 million.

“Nevertheless, both Port Authority and our airline partners consider complimentary WiFi to be a significant customer service upgrade,” said aviation director Thomas Bosco.

Currently, flyers have to pay $4.95 an hour to go online, or $7.95 a day.

The Port Authority had signed a 15-year contract with Boingo in 1999, and was able to change it after it went up for renewal in August.

“We heard our customer’s voices loud and clear and have reached an agreement with Boingo to provide the first half hour at those airports for free,” said executives Pat Foye.

Global Gateway Alliance, an advocacy group for the New York metro airports, had pushed for the Port Authority to add the amenity at the airports.

“The agreement to offer free Wi-Fi at the Port Authority’s airports is a win for New York and New Jersey, but most important, it is a win for more than 111 million passengers,” it said in a statement.
