This idea sure bombed.
A tone-deaf grass-roots organization trying to raise cash for Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino created a furor Friday by setting up a one-day “money bomb” tied to D-Day.
On the 70th anniversary of the allied attack, the conservative group “Midnight Ride” used the Web site Rob4NY to post photos that appeared to be from an actual D-Day event, with pictures of Astorino sprinkled in.
The site asked viewers to donate to the Republican candidate.
Aside from pictures, the site also featured a nearly two-minute video about the invasion at Normandy, ending with photos of Gov. Cuomo, with a voice calling him a “tyrant.”
An Astorino spokeswoman said he did not endorse the site — but would still take the money.
“We’re enormously grateful for whatever outside, grass-roots help we can get, but we would always prefer that discretion be used in imagery,” said spokeswoman Jessica Proud.
A “money bomb” is a one-day effort to get contributors to pool their donations to a candidate. The site claimed to have raised more than $16,000.
