A new name in Giants tight end mix: fullback Henry Hynoski

Henry Hynoski does not have a touchdown in the preseason. Or does he?

“As I’ve always said, when one of the running backs score, I feel like I score,’’ Hynoski said Thursday on the final day of training camp for the Giants.

If that’s the case, consider Hynoski to have scored a touchdown. His lead block paved the way for rookie Andre Williams’ touchdown in the preseason-opening victory over the Bills.

“That was vintage, when I was playing in 2012,’’ Hynoski said. “We scored on that play a bunch of times, so we’re excited to get the ground game going again and show that we’re the physical presence again on the field.’’

This is a big year for Hynoski. He made a recovery from springtime knee surgery to make it back for the second game of the 2013 season. He lasted only three games before a shoulder injury put him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season. He was re-signed on a one-year deal and is competing with another proven fullback, John Conner, for one spot on the roster.

To face this challenge, Hynoski said he’s down to 257 pounds after playing most of his career with the Giants at 265. Tom Coughlin mentioned that Hynoski can at times be considered a running back, though he’s only carried the ball five times in his NFL career. Hynoski also has added some responsibilities at tight end this summer and hopes the increased versatility helps him become a more desirable player.

“I’m really asked to do a lot,’’ Hynoski said. “Right now I can play fullback, obviously, running back, and tight end is something I feel I can do also. Getting into some routes, some inline blocking and that type of thing. In this league, the more you can do, the better. It certainly won’t hurt if I can expand my role a little bit more.

“In college, I was used as an H-back a lot, a motion guy. I did all that kind of stuff. I know how to do it here. I know all the plays, so if they were to line me up, I’d be ready to go. I just like playing football and if it involves blocking, I like it especially. Anywhere I can line up and get to hit somebody, I guess I’ll be happy.’’
