Former News Corp exec E. George Viles dies

E. George Viles, a former News Corp executive and publisher of New York magazine, has died in Australia.

The cause of death was an aortic aneurysm, according to The Australian newspaper.

Viles served as a trusted aide to News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch when the company expanded from Australia and Great Britain into the US during the 1970s and ’80s, and he helped arrange its first purchase, the San Antonio Express-News.

Viles became publisher of New York magazine after Murdoch, chairman of The Post and executive chairman of News Corp, bought the weekly magazine in 1976.

Viles was also named executive vice president of News America Publishing before retiring in the mid-1980s.

In 1956, Viles married Australian model June Massey Viles, with whom he had a daughter, Leisa-Jane Viles.

The family lived in Darien, Conn., before returning to their hometown of Sydney, Australia.
