5 of Miley’s most memorable rock ‘n’ roll covers

If you think Miley Cyrus is just another pop puppet, then think again.

Her “Bangerz” tour is currently in Europe, and as well as belting out “Wrecking Ball,” “Party in the USA” and all her other hits, the Nashville girl is showing off her taste for rock ’n’ roll by covering Arctic Monkeys, Bob Dylan and even the Smiths as part of her set.

Miley’s singing career is littered with covers, some of which have been surprisingly good, but some have been complete howlers.

Here’s a selection of five of the most notable.

‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,’ The Smiths

Miley caused an uproar in the holier-than-thou indie world with her version of the Smiths’ torch-anthem in Belfast last week. Sure, it was nowhere near as good as the original, but the 15,000 teenagers at the show (and many more watching online) now have a window into one of the greatest bands of all time.

Miley’s not being sacrilegious, she’s spreading the gospel!

‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,’ The Beatles

With her new BFF Wayne Coyne (of the Oklahoman psych-rock band the Flaming Lips), Miley sang an almost apocalyptic version of the Fab Four’s classic during the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Expect to hear more of this because Cyrus and Coyne have recorded a studio version, which is due to be released in October via the Flaming Lips’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” tribute album.

‘Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?,’ Arctic Monkeys

Although it wasn’t included in the initial broadcast, those who attended Miley’s performance for MTV’s “Unplugged” earlier in the year were treated to a bonus in the shape of this solid cover of the British band’s single.

Arctic Monkeys’ drummer Matt Helders heaped praise on the version, telling an Australian radio station, “She did some bits in there I wish we’d have done. She gets higher than we can . . . in the voice.”

‘You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go,’ Bob Dylan

This delicate version of the 1975 track has been a regular feature of Miley’s “Bangerz” tour this year, but it first surfaced as part of a Bob Dylan tribute album released by Amnesty International in 2012.

‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ Nirvana

Here’s one she’d probably rather forget.

During her South American tour in 2011, Miley decided to try her hand at the grunge anthem and only succeeding in sounding silly. Thankfully, that’s one cover she’s left in the past.
