Disgruntled manager suing boxing champ for ‘sweat equity’

The ousted manager of rising boxing star Chris Algieri – who will face a champion dubbed the ”Siberian Rocky” at Barclay’s Center on June 14 – hit the welterweight with a $350,000 lawsuit for prematurely knocking him out of his contract, according to the complaint.

Manager Humberto Romero wants a 15 percent cut of Algieri’s purses from his recent undefeated fights.

Romero says he put the Long Island fighter on the map only to be fired in February 2013 — even though he was due an extension on his contract through this fall because of injuries that kept Algieri out of the ring.

“At the time of the unilateral termination Romero had already invested three years of ‘sweat equity’ into building Algieri’s reputation and standing within the boxing community,” the suit says.

The former manager claims Algieri is now representing himself and using unlicensed reps.

Romero says his ousting was a below-the-belt jab that has severely harmed “the success and integrity of his management career.”

Romero signed up with the 30-year-old boxer in April 2010, booking six fights before Algieri suffered multiple injuries that ultimately required surgery, the Manhattan civil suit says.

He says the 18-month time-out automatically extends his three-year contract through October 2014.

Now Romero also wants a cut of Algieri’s $250,000 payment for the HBO-televised world title bout against Russian Ruslan Provodnikov later this month.

Algieri, of Huntington, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
