Man gets one-year sentence for helping dad fake his own death

A Long Island man who admitted helping his father fake his own drowning in a life-insurance scam has been sentenced to a year in jail.

Jonathan Roth, 23, of Massapequa apologized in a Mineola court on Tuesday. He admitted helping Raymond Roth, 48, fake his death in 2012.

The son claimed his father had drowned at Jones Beach. After a massive search, the elder Roth surfaced in Florida and got a speeding ticket in South Carolina.

Raymond Roth is awaiting sentencing and is facing trial this week on separate charges that he impersonated a police officer and tried to abduct a woman. The elder Roth has pleaded not guilty to those charges, which could bring a 15-year prison term. He is being held without bail.
