Wright to be re-evaluated Monday after MRI shows bruised shoulder

PITTSBURGH — The Mets will wait and see on David Wright’s status.

Wright was diagnosed with a bruised rotator cuff in his left shoulder Saturday, a day after he was scratched from the Mets’ lineup at PNC Park with soreness.

According to assistant general manager John Ricco, the third baseman likely won’t need a stint on the disabled list, but he will be re-evaluated Monday. Wright, who returned to New York for an MRI exam on Saturday, will not rejoin the team until at least Monday night in Atlanta.

Wright said he incurred the injury two weeks ago on a head-first dive into second base, but was fine to play until Thursday, when he aggravated the shoulder on two defensive plays.

Eric Campbell went 3-for-4 with an RBI replacing Wright in the Mets’ 5-3 victory over the Pirates on Saturday.

Manager Terry Collins said he wasn’t happy team officials made Wright’s shoulder injury public before Friday’s game instead of waiting until afterward.

“My issue is, I wish it wouldn’t have gotten out,” Collins said before Saturday’s game. “I want [the Pirates] thinking [Wright] was over there.”

Collins noted that such gamesmanship might have affected the manner in which Pirates manager Clint Hurdle manipulated his bullpen in the late innings.

“It was announced before the game and it put us in a tough spot,” Collins said.

If Wright is placed on the DL, the team likely would recall Wilmer Flores from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Dillon Gee is scheduled to pitch for Single-A Brooklyn on Sunday in his second rehab start. The Mets expect Gee to make an additional start in the minors before rejoining the team. Gee was placed on the disabled list May 14 with a strained right lat.

The Mets will have fireworks — with a patriotic songs theme — following their July 4 game against the Rangers.

Fireworks will be launched from Citi Field’s roof and center-field grass, providing a 360-degree feel for fans throughout the ballpark. The club announced that discounted tickets are available to current and former military, police, fire, EMS and government employees. Tickets start at $17 and are available at the team’s website.
