Sam’s roommate: Not all Missouri players were supportive

The public response to Missouri defensive end Michael Sam announcing he is gay was overwhelmingly supportive and positive.

But a different picture was painted by a college roommate of Sam’s in a Fox Sports report on Monday, the day after Sam’s bombshell coming-out announcement.

Eric Waters, a senior tight end and Sam’s roommate, wrote on Twitter that some of Sam’s teammates were not as supportive of his sexual orientation as has been portrayed.

Using the Twitter handle “Mista Chowww,’’ Waters stated in one post: “Half of y’all posting these pics saying how proud you are. But most of y’all was the ones talkin s–t behind his back in the locker room.’’

After Waters’ initial tweet drew some harsh responses, he did not back down, writing: “If you don’t like what I have to say then don’t follow me. I’m sleeping the real. If you don’t like hearing the truth then click unfollow.’’

In another tweet, Waters posted: “I refuse to sugar coat the truth… Like I said if you have a problem please click the unfollow button and save yourself from the truth.’’

Sam, who is preparing for the NFL Scouting Combine in a couple of weeks, led the SEC with 11 ½ sacks and 19 tackles for losses en route to being named a unanimous All-American and the SEC’s co-Defensive Player of the Year. Mostly because he is a college defensive end who is projected to be an NFL 3-4 linebacker because of his size, Sam has been projected by a number of scouts to be chosen somewhere in the middle of the draft, from late third round onward.
