Sharapova-Ivanovic match got a little nasty

The US Open is still a week away, but here’s hoping Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic meet sometime during the Flushing fortnight.

The two star singles players had a bit of a dust-up Saturday night in the Western & Open semifinals in Mason, Ohio, before Ivanovic held on for a three-set victory.

With Sharapova serving at 0-1 in the final set, Ivanovic pulled up after a point at 15-all and called for a medical timeout due to nausea. A doctor had her lie down on the court to get her blood pressure taken and receive pills.

After Sharapova double-faulted in the final set to even it at 4-all, she appeared to turn to the umpire, tap her upper arm with her racket and say, “Check her blood pressure.”

“I never actually got a clear answer on what it was, but, I mean, I don’t know,” Sharapova told reporters. “Could have been something like an anxiety [attack] or something. I’m not really sure what you take blood pressure for. We played a pretty long point afterwards and she seemed to be doing well. Not really sure what was going on there.”

After the match, the two shook hands. Ivanovic lost to Serena Williams in the final the next day.
