Desk cop shoots suspect who was trying to run down officers

An NYPD cop went from desk duty to Dirty Harry when he shot and wounded a suspect who was trying to run down other officers while on his first week of patrol, sources said.

Officer James Hasper, who was just transferred from the parade-barrier unit to the 69th Precinct in Brooklyn, was starting his shift Thursday when he witnessed the suspect ram an SUV into an unmarked police car on Rockaway Parkway at 7:30 p.m., according to law-enforcement sources.

Hasper aimed his weapon at the vehicle and fired, hitting Raymond Martinez, 46, once in the shoulder.

Martinez was taken to Brookdale Hospital and was recovering from his injuries. Charges against him were pending Thursday night.

Martinez initially ran a red light and sped off when officers attempted to stop him, cops said.

The suspect, who has 12 prior arrests in the city, then allegedly proceeded to smash into a number of cars.

Two victims inside a truck were injured when Martinez rammed into them and their heads smashed the windshield, sources said.

When he was finally stopped by police, he allegedly attempted to escape again, ramming into the unmarked car and trying to drive off.

That’s when Hasper, who was transferred to the 69th Precinct as part of the “All Out” program — in which cops are taken off desk duty and put on patrol — noticed the incident unfolding.

Hasper had just been starting his shift, and it may have been his first day on patrol after training, a source said.

All Out designed to get 1,000 more officers on the streets in response to a spike in crime.

Commissioner Bill Bratton has said it’s normal for shootings to increase over the summer, and decided to take officers off desk duty to combat the problem.
