Congressman wants Lerner arrested for contempt

A GOP congressman wants former IRS honcho Lois Lerner arrested and hauled off to jail, where, he says, she can be questioned over the tea party-targeting tax scandal.

Rep. Steve Stockman of Texas filed a resolution Thursday calling for the House sergeant-at-arms to haul in Lerner for contempt of Congress.

Stockman said the Justice Department was not the proper institution to investigate Lerner.

“How much longer will the House allow itself to be mocked?” Stockman said.

“It is up to this House to uphold the rule of law and hold accountable those who illegally targeted American citizens for simply having different ideas than the president.”

Under the resolution, Lerner would have legal rights and access to an attorney if she were incarcerated.

Republicans held Lerner in contempt in May for refusing to answer questions about her role in the scandal, though in the past she has said she did not target tea party groups.
