Man dies after falling down broken elevator shaft

A man died after falling down a broken elevator shaft in Queens Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was on the fourth floor of 41-90 Frame Place in Flushing when cops say he went to step in an elevator as the doors opened, only to fall down the open elevator shaft and onto the top of the elevator on the third floor one story below.

“He basically walked into an elevator shaft and fell onto the top of the elevator,” a police source said of the tragic accident.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the building’s elevator had been issued 11 violations in the past, but they were all dismissed. However, the Department of Buildings said one violation regarding the elevator remains open.
