Democrat defends bill to roll back human-trafficking law

WASHINGTON — The co-sponsor of a bill to roll back a 2008 human-trafficking law stood by his legislation Sunday although he has been ostracized by fellow Hispanic Democrats for working with Republicans.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) has been taking heat from fellow Dems since he publicly lambasted President Obama for not visiting the Texas border during the height of the migrant children crisis, calling it Obama’s “Katrina moment.”

Now he’s joined up with Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) on legislation that would speed up deportations of Central American children — a bill that the rest of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus believes is inhumane.

Cuellar said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” that he’s responding to the needs of his border district.

“The American public wants us to have an orderly border,” Cuellar said. “Right now … they’re seeing chaos at the border.”
