County staffer treated to weekly ‘weigh-in’ sessions: suit

A female custodian for the Suffolk County Department of Public Works was treated like garbage by her bosses, who used a measuring tape to measure her stomach in an effort to get her to shed weight, a new lawsuit charges.

Arline Magnusson, 52, was ordered by supervisor Kevin Spenceto “lose weight to conform her appearance to that of a stereotypical female,” the suit says.

Spence even bought a tape to measure Magnusson’s arms and stomach on a regular basis, the suit says.

The “weigh-in sessions” lasted for four weeks, according to the papers filed Monday in Central Islip federal court by Magnusson’s attorneys, Michael Borrelli and Alexander Coleman.

Her federal suit against Suffolk County seeks unspecified monetary damages. An attorney representing the county did not immediately return a call for comment.
