Jets’ Mornhinweg weighs in: Geno has edge on Vick

Michael Vick was right. It’s not a true competition.

Though Rex Ryan said Wednesday there would be an open competition for the Jets starting quarterback job this season between Geno Smith and Vick, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg made it fairly clear the job is Smith’s to lose.

“There is competition,” Mornhinweg said on a conference call with season-ticket holders on Thursday. “Now, it may not quite be like the competition we had last year [between Smith and Mark Sanchez], where everything was 50/50. We’re trying to continue the progression with Geno, and then have Mike ready to go. It’s just that simple, and Mike knows the exact expectations and roles that he has and Geno knows the exact expectations.”

Vick, who signed a one-year deal with the Jets in the offseason, said last week he knew he likely would be backing up the second-year pro Smith.

“I knew what I was getting into when I got here,” Vick said. “It’s everything I expected. I’m having fun with the guys.”

Mornhinweg also said right guard Willie Colon should “certainly be back before training camp,” after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. He is expected to be out 4 to 6 weeks.
