Ravens are NFL’s new jailbirds with fifth offseason arrest

The Ravens are the new Bengals – and no, that’s not a prediction they will win the AFC North.

John Harbaugh’s club is making a run at the “record” of the 2006 Bengals, who had nine players arrested or suspended for their actions off the field. Cornerback Jimmy Smith’s arrest Saturday night for disorderly conduct brings the number to five Ravens to find trouble with the law.

Running back Ray Rice was accused of the most noteworthy infraction, committing felony aggravated assault of his would-be wife in a hotel elevator in Atlantic City in February. He could face a suspension from the league. He entered a pre-trial intervention program after pleading not guilty to aggravated assault charges.

Other incidents: offensive lineman Jah Reid was accepted into a pretrial diversion program following a charge of misdemeanor battery; wide receiver Deonte Thompson was arrested for felony possession of marijuana, but the charges were dropped; rookie running back Lorenzo Taliaferro was booked for a misdemeanor destruction of property, drunk and disorderly conduct, and is scheduled for a July 31 court date.
