Ranking the 5 most terrifying creatures on ‘Game of Thrones’

Warning: This article contains spoilers.

Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones” featured an epic, episode-long battle at the Wall when thousands of Wildlings stormed Castle Black. Jon Snow was reunited with his Wildling fling, Ygritte, and there were axes to heads and swords through eyes. But the MVPs were the long-feared Giants, who came riding in with their massive mammoths.

Mythical creatures appear sparingly on “Thrones.” But a few times a season, we’ll get a pure fantasy treat with Daenerys’ dragon children or the spine-chilling, ghastly White Walkers.

So, who’s the scariest of them all? Here’s a power ranking of the “Thrones” creatures:

  1. 1. Dragons

In Season 1, Daenerys Targaryen gave birth to three baby dragons, and over the past four seasons, they’ve grown into huge, terrifying, fiercely local creatures. They can roast an enemy with one pull of fire, and they’re smart enough to play prisoner until their mama gets what she wants. Even Tywin Lannister is terrified of the tactical edge they bring Daenerys.

Their strength, intelligence and loyalty make them the most powerful creatures in Westeros.

  2. 2. White Walkers

Most people of Westeros don’t believe in the White Walkers, but the legend goes: White Walkers live beyond the Wall, where they were pushed thousands of years ago after the War for the Dawn. They look kind of like humans, except they’re larger, with mummy-like skin and glowing eyes.

We’ve seen the White Walkers multiply by bringing the dead back to life to act as their servants, the Wights. And they have the ability to freeze an enemy with just a touch. But they proved conquerable when the unthreatening Samwell Tarly killed one last season to save his love, Gilly.

  3. 3. Direwolves

They look like wolves on steroids and they’re unwaveringly devoted to their owners, the children of the House of Stark. They’ve ripped out many a throat to save Jon Snow and Bran Stark.

But the Direwolves play more the role of weapon than warrior, and they can be caged fairly easily.

  4. 4. Three-eyed raven

This mysterious bird only appears in Bran Stark’s dreams — so far. The raven led the young, crippled boy to his family’s crypt, predicting his father’s death, and has this season led him to the Wall, where his brother, Jon, is stationed.

The bird’s psychic powers score it some points, even though we know very little about it.

  5. 5. Giants

Sure, they’re enormous and they have tamed mammoths as battle companions. But the Giants didn’t live up to the hype in Sunday night’s battle. Just one measly arrow to the neck brought a Giant down at the Wall.
