Bitcoin plunges over transaction problems

Bitcoin prices dropped Monday from recent levels after the exchange Mt. Gox said it had identified a bitcoin-wide problem in the processing of withdrawals in the digital currency.

Mt. Gox —halted withdrawals on Friday — defined withdrawals as transactions from a bitcoin wallet in its system to an external bitcoin address.

Currency withdrawals were not affected.

“The problem we have identified is not limited to MtGox, and affects all transactions where bitcoins are being sent to a third party,” Mt. Gox said in a statement on Monday.

Bitcoin prices on Mt. Gox fell to $562.60 from about $800 late Friday, while prices on Bitstamp dropped to $623.71 from about $760 late Friday.
