NYPD 2-day ticket blitz nails 4,500 speeders

Cops issued more than half a typical month’s worth of speeding tickets in just two days this week in a citywide speeding-enforcement blitz, the NYPD said Thursday.

More than 4,500 speeders were ticketed on Tuesday and Wednesday in the NYPD’s effort to reduce traffic deaths and collisions as part of Mayor de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” plan.

In contrast, in all of April, 8,407 drivers received speeding summonses, according to the NYPD’s moving-violations report.

Brooklyn, with 1,249 tickets, and Queens, with 1,219, topped the count of summonses.

Next came Manhattan, with 1,175 drivers getting speeding tickets, followed by The Bronx with 782 and Staten Island with 389.

According to the city’s Web site, Vision Zero “is intended to help end traffic deaths and injuries on New York streets.”

Among the goals of Vision Zero is the increased use of speed cameras, more stringent enforcement of moving violations, reducing speed limits and improving street designs.

Also, public campaigns on safe driving are being introduced.
