Fumbled 911 calls delayed help to burning convent

A shocking new audio tape shows how a miscommunication with a 911 operator delayed the emergency response in a fire that torched a Staten Island convent.

In the 911 audiotape, aired on WNYC Wednesday, a nun is desperately trying to give her location to the dispatcher who repeatedly asks for the address.

“Am I sure? It’s eight five zero,” the nun can be heard, while gagging on smoke, in the 911 call from last October. “But please hurry ‘cause it’s coming.”

The FDNY said that the dispatcher’s fumble cost them a delay of about two minutes.

Another nun was injured in the convent fire when she jumped out the second story window to escape the flames.
