Avella and Liu spar over pensions in Queens

Queens voters need an accounting degree to make sense of Friday’s dueling attacks by state Sen. Tony Avella and rival John Liu.

Facing off in the Democratic Senate primary next month, the two sparred over the performance of city pension funds during Liu’s four years as comptroller.

“Disgraced politician John Liu’s political campaign is downright lying about their candidate’s atrocious record as city comptroller,” charged Avella spokesman Jason Elan.

But the Liu campaign pointed to a 17.4 percent return in the funds during fiscal 2014 and a 13.4 percent average jump the previous five years.
