Tom (Allen Leech) has a chance meeting with Sarah Bunting (Daisy Lewis), a schoolteacher who asks him to show her around the Abbey. Thomas (Rob James-Collier) sees them larking about; he tattles to Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), implying that Tom had taken his guest to a bedroom. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) finds a train ticket in Bates’ (Brendan Coyle) coat pocket for York to London on the day Gillingham’s valet died; she tells Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), and they agree to keep quiet. Later at the celebration ball, Mary is startled to learn from Gillingham (Tom Cullen) that Mr. Blake (Julian Ovenden) is in line to inherit a huge estate from a cousin, so he is more suitable for her than she thought. The Countess (Elizabeth McGovern) offers the staff a fun day out; Mrs. Hughes tricks Carson (Jim Carter) into choosing the seaside, where they splash in the surf.
