Pistorius may be taken into custody for psych exam

Oscar Pistorius could be locked up as soon as Wednesday, after South African prosecutors asked to have the Blade Runner taken into custody for a psyche evaluation.

The prosecution claims the defense’s own star witness — who testified that Pistorius suffers an anxiety disorder — is enough evidence to have the sprinter and accused murderer grabbed for a 30-day exam.

Judge Thokozile Masipa adjourned the court early on Tuesday and is expected to rule on the prosecution request on Wednesday.

“On the accused’s version, there is an indication that psychiatric disorder may have played a role,” chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Tuesday.

“The fact that it is a psychiatric diagnosis may play a role and must play a role and that’s what we base our application on.”

Psychiatrist Merryll Vorster testified on Monday and Tuesday that Pistorius’ shaky mental state contributed to the defendant’s heightened sense of vulnerability.

Pistorius blew away gal pal Reeva Steenkamp in the early morning hours of Feb. 14, 2013.

Prosecutors claim Pistorius killed Steenkamp after an argument, while defense lawyers insist their client opened fire, thinking an intruder had broken inside his Pretoria home.

“People generally with general anxiety disorders probably shouldn’t have firearms,” Vorster said.

She said anxiety disorder “is not associated with violence,” but added, “when you add a firearm it makes that person a risk.”
