Motorist killed as floods wreak havoc on morning commute

Flooded city streets wreaked havoc on Thursday’s commute and one motorist was killed in Queens when he lost control of his car, authorities said.

The 22 year-old man died on the Long Island Expressway when he tried to merge onto the Clearview Expressway-a flood prone area.

The victim was in a Nissan Altima traveling eastbound around 3:50 a.m. on the Long Island expressway near exit 27 when he lost control and crashed into a wall, police said.

The identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification.

Road flooding also snarled up the morning commute.

The West Side Highway was backed up due to flooding conditions from 125th Street through 158th Street, said a spokesperson from the Office of Emergency management.

Motorists should also expect delays on the Belt parkway between Coney Island Avenue and Mill Basin also due to flooding.

The Office of Emergency Management said commuters should expect residual delays throughout Thursday morning.

Central Park was hit with 3.5 inches of rain between midnight and 10 p.m. Wednesday and a flood warning was in effect through the early morning hours Thursday.
