How Mets and Yankees prospects stack up with baseball’s best

For the mid-division Mets and Yankees, there is promise in the pipeline.

The two teams were each represented in the leading midseason lists of baseball’s top 50 prospects.

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard led the way, ranked No. 19 by Baseball America and No. 9 by Baseball Prospectus despite his rocky year in Triple-A. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo (No. 48 in BA, No. 45 in BP), a former first-round pick now at Double-A, and catcher Kevin Plawecki (No. 40 in BA), recently called up to Triple-A, also made apperances for Mets farmhands.

Scout-wowing Single-A right-hander Luis Severino was the Yankees’ lone representative on each list, ranking 34th by Baseball America’s measure and No. 48 on the Baseball Prospectus list.

Syndergaard, Plawecki and Severino will play in Sunday’s Future’s Game as part of the All-Star festivities in Minnesota, as will Yankees Double-A catcher/outfielder Peter O’Brien.

Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, despite a wrist injury that has cost him much of the season at Single-A, topped both lists. With trade acquisition Addison Russell joining Kris Bryant and Javier Baez, the Cubs placed three infielders in the top 7 of each list.
