Owner of theater that called cops on diabetic makes amends

The owner of a Brooklyn movie house that called cops to boot a diabetic man for munching his own strawberries apologized to him on Friday — and promised to offer healthier snacks at the theater.

Park Slope Pavilion owner Ben Kafash made amends with Michael Kass, a 41-year-old Type 2 diabetic who snuck in the berries because he couldn’t eat junk food at the cinema.

“I apologized to him extensively. At the end of the day, it shouldn’t have happened. I told him to come back and give us another try,” Kafash told the Post.

The theater owner is now considering building a juice bar and frozen yogurt stand and is seeking “community input” about what healthy snacks to serve.

Customers with special dietary needs will also be allowed to bring in outside food, he said.

Kafash may also discipline the manager who called the police on Kass, who was humiliated after cops escorted him out of a showing of “Divergent” on Sunday because he broke the cinema’s no-outside-food rule.

“I told her, ‘We have to talk about this. We may have to take action. I don’t know if this job is right for you,’” Kafash said.

“We’re going to discuss that internally,” he added.

Kass, a financial analyst who lives in Park Slope, was happy about the phone call, noting in an e-mail on Friday, “I was glad that we were able to resolve the matter.”
