Meet the Canadian teen taking tennis by storm

It’s unfair to judge a person by one answer in a post-match interview.

But most non-tennis-loving sports fans now know one thing about Eugenie Bouchard: She has a crush on Justin Bieber. That was the 19-year-old’s answer when asked “if she could date anyone in the world” after her win over Ana Ivanovic put her into the Australian Open semifinals.

So here are some other things that you probably do not know about — and reasons to root for — the 30th-ranked Canadian, who takes on Li Na on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Melbourne).

– Eugenie is one of four kids in the Bouchard clan, including her fraternal twin Beatrice. All four are named after royalty. The twin’s names mirrored those of the two daughters of Prince Andrew, younger sister Charlotte shares a name with Princess Caroline of Monaco’s daughter and the youngest, William, was named with England’s next king in mind.

– What is the Genie Army?

It’s a group of about dozen or so college students that started rooting for Bouchard at the Hopman Cup, which was played in Perth, Australia. Bouchard and Milos Raonic finished second in Group A for Canada’s best result in tournament that pairs one male and female from each country.

According to the Courier Mail, there are plans to send the Army to several tournaments with Bouchard, including the U.S. Open in New York.

The Army has presented Bouchard with a different stuffed animal of an Australian creature after each of her last four wins: a kangaroo, koala, kookaburra and wombat. Wonder what’s left.

– She models her post-match interview style after Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.

“I like watching Tiger Woods after he wins a tournament, or obviously in tennis I love Roger. So, I always say Roger for everything,” Bouchard told the New York Times.

It seems dubious after the Bieber boast, but we’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

– She is the second Canadian to reach a Grand Slam semifinal. Carling Bassett-Seguso made it to the 1984 U.S. Open semis, falling to Chris Evert 6-2, 6-2.

“When I heard that, I went, ‘Oh, my God. Thirty years,’” Bassett-Seguso told the Toronto Star of Bouchard.

“Then I thought how awesome it is that it’s happening now and how great this is for Canadian tennis.”

The Star refers to Bassett-Seguso as the “Anna Kournikova of her day.” Compliment or insult? You decide.

– Her love of pop stars goes beyond Bieber. We know this because her love of Twitter, where she has nearly 80,000 followers.

Bouchard tweeted a photo of Miley Cyrus performing at Jingle Ball in New York.
