Revis gives Pat answer: It’s ‘about just winning’

Darrelle Revis apparently still thinks it’s 2005 based on his first comments as a Patriot on Monday.

The former Jets star said in a conference call with Boston-area media he signed with archrival New England because the Patriots — who last won a Super Bowl nine years ago — are all about winning.

“It’s basically about just winning,” Revis said. “I weighed my options and I just wanted to win. I felt like this is the right place. What better organization than the New England Patriots to be a part of?”

Revis, who was released by the Buccaneers after just one season because his price tag for 2014 was considered too high by new coach Lovie Smith, signed a two-year, $32 million deal with the Patriots that is essentially a one-year contract worth $16 million.

The second year is considered a non-starter because Revis would carry a $25 million cap figure in 2015 if he doesn’t renegotiate or agree to a long-term deal before then.

Revis also got the Patriots to formally agree not to designate him as their franchise player after the 2014 season, meaning he most likely will become a free agent again. The Jets first-round pick in 2007 is now on pace to play for his fourth team in four years.

Revis told reporters he communicated with Tom Brady earlier Monday but wouldn’t describe the chat other than to say it was “a great conversation.”

More important for Revis was clearing the air with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, whom the All-Pro cornerback labeled a “jerk” in a 2012 interview with ESPN while still a member of the Jets.

Revis said he spoke with Belichick about the comment and said the two already had moved on.

“Me and Bill, we had a conversation about it and it’s in the past,” Revis said. “We’re both moving forward and we’re excited about working together and trying to win games. I think that’s the biggest goal here — to win games.”
