Two guards and twenty inmates busted after Rikers sweep

Authorities conducting a massive sweep of corruption at Rikers Island found a treasure trove of illegal contraband, including drugs and weapons, officials said.

Roughly 20 inmates were busted Tuesday after investigators discovered the cache, which had been smuggled into the jail and stashed behind cell walls.

A laundry list of charges against the prisoners is pending, but is expected to include drug possession, assaulting prison staff and arson.

Two correction officers suspected of smuggling the goods into the jail were also arrested as part of the unprecedented probe at the city’s largest jail, and charged with possession of a controlled substance, court documents show.

The raid came after the city’s Department of Investigation began looking into an increase in violence between inmates and guards, a DOI spokeswoman said.
