Colon has sore back, but is not expected to miss start

PHOENIX — Bartolo Colon was bothered by back soreness when he got shelled by the Angels on Sunday, a Mets source confirmed Tuesday night, but for now, the team is optimistic the right-hander will take the ball on Saturday.

“Right now he expects to make his start,” general manager Sandy Alderson said.

Colon allowed four homers to the Angels — including three straight in the first inning — and finished with a line that included nine earned runs allowed on 11 hits over five innings.

If Colon can’t go against the Braves, they would most likely give lefty John Lannan the start. The team has Daisuke Matsuzaka at Triple-A Las Vegas, but probably wouldn’t promote the right-hander unless Colon were to need an extended absence.
