Teen who jumped in river to save cousin dies

A 13-year-old boy who dived into the Bronx River Friday in a failed effort to save his cousin died on Sunday — and his family plan to donate the organs to help others, their pastor told The Post.

Gavin Wellington jumped into the river on Friday to save his cousin, Erickson Villa, who could not swim.

It took rescuers an hour to get to Erickson, and by then it was too late. He died a short time later.

Wellington was being treated at the Children’s Center of Montefiore Hospital — and the family initially thought he was making improvements until his condition worsened on Sunday.

The Rev. Joel Bauza said they were prepared to take him off of life support when he passed away.

His organs will be donated to science to help others in need, Bauza said.

“The mother is considering doing that also because of the fact that he did jump into the water to save his cousin,” Bauza said. “It was an act of heroism.”

The pastor also encouraged the public to donate to the cash strapped family’s of the boys, who are planning to fly their bodies to their native Dominican Republic where they will be buried.
