Lions draft NYC product Reid

Another day, another New York City product off to the NFL.

Defensive tackle Caraun Reid of Princeton was the latest selection, a fifth round pick (158th overall) of the Lions on Saturday. The well-rounded Reid, a stellar student and accomplished singer who attended Mount St. Michael High School in The Bronx, didn’t start playing football until high school.

He enjoyed a standout career at Princeton, racking up 20.5 sacks, 168 tackles and leading the Tigers to their first Ivy League crown since 2006.

He follows Staten Island defensive tackle Dominique Easley of Curtis, a first round pick by the Patriots — the first opening-round selection from the city in 28 years — and third-round pick Jay
Bromley, another defensive tackle out of Queens, who was taken by the Giants.

“It’s great, it means a lot, especially because we’re representing not only New York City, but representing different boroughs,” Reid said. “We’re trying to be an inspiration and show kids, yeah, its possible to succeed at the collegiate level and make it to the NFL.”

A two-time All-American honoree, the 6-foot-2, 302-pound Reid joins a star-studded group of defensive tackles with the Lions: starters Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley and top reserve C.J. Mosley.

“That was one of the first things I thought of when the coaches called me,” Reid said. “It’s a great opportunity for me to grow as a player.”

Marist’s Terrence Fede, a defensive end from Nyack, N.Y., was selected in the seventh round (234th overall) by the Dolphins. … Rutgers wide receiver Brandon Coleman, a projected middle-round pick, went surprisingly undrafted.
