Panic at NJ mall after exploding tires mistaken for shots

PARAMUS, N.J. — Authorities believe that a car fire may have led to reports of gunshots that forced them to evacuate a mall in Paramus.

New Jersey State Police Capt. Stephen Jones said that police have found no evidence that any shots were fired at the Garden State Plaza mall Saturday night. He says police are going through the building to rule out any threat.

Twenty-six-year-old Brittany Berdy, of Wyckoff, says she was eating dinner at a restaurant at the mall when she went outside and saw tires explode on a car that was on fire. She says the tire explosion sounded like gunshots and the panic and evacuation started shortly after.
In November, a 20-year-old Teaneck man fired shots inside the mall, terrifying shoppers and employees before killing himself.
