Metro-North engineers to be tested for sleep apnea

Metro-North wants to test all of its engineers for sleep apnea in the aftermath of a fatal Bronx derailment that occurred when the engineer dozed off.

The effort comes two weeks after a National Transportation Safety Board report revealed that engineer William Rockefeller had been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

But MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said the railroad will have to work out the details with the union representing engineers — and would ultimately like to extend the testing to other employees.

Rockefeller told investigators he felt dazed seconds before December’s deadly derailment on the Hudson line.

The engineer then dozed off just as the train was whipping around a sharp curve at 82 mph in a 30-mph zone.

Four people were killed and dozens injured when his Metro-North train flew off the tracks near the Spuyten Duyvil station in The Bronx.

Sleep apnea is a medical condition that causes an individual to repeatedly doze off during daylight hours due to brief periods of restrictive breathing.

It is still not clear if Rockefeller will be hit with criminal charges.
