Rangers dump Derek Dorsett for a third-round pick

Looking to create cap room, the Rangers moved right wing Derek Dorsett to the Canucks on Friday afternoon in exchange for a third-round pick (85th overall) in this year’s NHL Entry Draft.

With that extra maneuverability — Dorsett had a cap number of $1.63 million — the Rangers plan to re-sign left wing Dan Carcillo, an unrestricted free agent.

Dorsett came over to Broadway last year from the Blue Jackets as part of the Marian Gaborik deal, along with John Moore and Derick Brassard. In 51 games last season, he had four goals and four assists, and failed to score during the postseason.

The Rangers don’t have a first round pick in the draft, which begins Friday night in Philadelphia. But they have a second-rounder, two third-rounders, a fourth-rounder and a fifth-rounder.
