Devils’ Elias ill, may miss Rangers game

Devils leading scorer Patrik Elias, who set the team’s career goal-scoring record with his 348th Saturday in Montreal, sat out practice Monday because he was ill, the team said.

His availability for Tuesday’s visit to Newark by the Rangers, the first meeting between the rivals this season, is uncertain.

Coach Pete DeBoer is also ill, a team spokesman said, although he handled practice on ice Monday.

One vet noted that there were several runny-nosed children at Sunday’s team holiday party.

Elias, 35, stands 13-16-29 atop the Devils’ scoring chart this season, leading in goals and points. He already held the team records for assists and points before breaking John MacLean’s 14-year goal record with a pair Saturday.
