Condé names Mary Murcko publisher of Self magazine

Condé Nast tapped Gannett executive Mary Murcko to be the publisher of Self on Friday, completing a two-day management overhaul at the magazine.

Murcko replaces Laura McEwen, who was given the old heave-ho on Thursday along with Editor-in-Chief Lucy Danziger. Condé lured the No. 2 editor at Hearst’s Cosmopolitan, Joyce Chang, to fill Danziger’s shoes.

Murcko was president of national sales at Gannett, including USA Today, USA Weekend, and its digital and community newspapers.

She also has a deep background in the fitness category from her days as executive vice president and group publisher at Rodale, overseeing Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Prevention and Runner’s World.

The management shake-up at Self hints at an even more extensive makeover.

A redesign a year ago was supposed to bring in a younger audience, but it appears to have chased off some loyal readers while advertisers remain skittish.

Ad pages were down 18 percent through April.
