US Airways CEO says merger delay ‘fine by us’

The CEO of US Airways says he still wants to merge with American Airlines, but he’s in no hurry.

American is reorganizing under bankruptcy protection, and it has the exclusive right to propose its own turnaround plan. That right was recently extended until the end of this year. Meanwhile, the process of getting new contracts with its unions is taking longer than expected. Those issues are keeping US Airways on the sidelines.

US Airways Group Inc. CEO Doug Parker says “the delay is fine by us — there is certainly no urgency for us to merge” as long as they get a chance to present their own plan in time.

Parker says in his comments to workers on Wednesday that US Airways is doing fine on its own.
