Joe Namath botches coin toss, nails fur coat

Maybe Joe Namath knew which side Seahawks captains Russell Wilson and Heath Farwell were going to choose for the ceremonial coin toss before Super Bowl XLVIII.

Because Namath, dressed in a waist-length, hooded mink coat despite the seasonably warm weather conditions, tried to toss the coin before the captains had picked heads or tails. Referee Terry McAulay caught it before it landed. Seattle won the toss anyway, and deferred.

Forty-five years ago, Namath famously predicted the Jets would win Super Bowl III and promptly led them to a shocking upset of the Colts. This week he told “CBS Sunday Morning” head injuries sustained during his playing career have adversely affected his health.
